Pay contractors from your Wise balance, and match what comes in

Handl connects to your Wise Business account two ways. Incoming transfers match to your invoices automatically. Outgoing pay runs leave your balance and land with your contractors, fee shown, agency pays it.

Free for 7 days, then flat plans from $29/mo.

What syncs

Two directions. One token.

Incoming transfers get matched to invoices. Outgoing pay runs get paid from the balance you already hold. Both use the same Wise connection.

  • Match transfers to invoices.

A client pays by bank transfer, Handl spots it on your Wise statement and marks the invoice paid. Already live.

    When

Once Wise is connected. Details in the Help Centre article on matching incoming Wise transfers to invoices.

  • Pay runs from any balance you hold.

Statements are drafted from approved hours, approved by you, then paid from the currency balance you hold in Wise. Target-fixed: the contractor gets the full amount and you wear the fee.

    When

When you approve a run. A person approves every run, and nothing moves before that.

  • Pay to their own Wise account.

By email or Wisetag, or to a bank account. Contractors don't need Wise.

    When

Wise to Wise in the same currency is free. Otherwise Wise's fee is shown on every payout, and you pay it.

Division of labour

What stays where

Handl does

  • Drafts each statement from approved hours
  • Approval, caps and the audit log
  • Records the payout and emails the remittance
  • Books approved expenses and adjustments into project costs

Wise does

  • Holds your balance
  • Moves the money and converts currency
  • Charges its own fee, which you pay
  • Delivers it to the contractor

Handl never holds the money.

Setup

How to connect Handl to Wise

You create a token in Wise and paste it into Handl. Four steps. The Connect Wise dialog tells you where to look.

Have these ready

  • A Wise Business account based in AU, NZ, US, CA, SG or MY (see the honest bit below).
  • Permission to create an API token in Wise.
  • A balance in the currency you want to pay from.
  1. Step 1: Create a full-access API token in Wise.

Settings → API tokens in your Wise Business account. Read-only tokens can't fund transfers.

  2. Step 2: Paste it into Handl.

Settings → Money → Pay your team → Connect Wise. Add a label so you know which balance it is.

  3. Step 3: Pick the profile and see your balances.

Every currency you hold shows on the Pay runs page.

  4. Step 4: Set caps and invite your first contractor.

Max per run, max per contractor. Then the first statement drafts itself.

The honest bit

Who this works for today.

  • Wise Business accounts based in AU, NZ, US, CA, SG or MY.

Wise lets personal API tokens fund transfers for Business accounts based in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia. If your Wise account is somewhere else, connect Airwallex instead.

  • From 0.19% per transfer for conversions.

wise.com/au/pricing/business, 26 Oct 2026. Wise to Wise in the same currency is free. You pay Wise. We show it.

Time in, books out

Hours in. Pay out. Books updated.

Wise sits in the middle of the same flow as the rest of Handl: the hours come in, the client invoice goes out, the contractor gets paid, and the books stay in your accounting tool.

  • Hours in

Harvest, Toggl, Clockify, Hubstaff and Upwork timesheets supply the approved hours that each statement is drafted from.

  • Handl

Drafts the statement, runs the approval and books the cost to the project.

  • Wise

Pays the contractor from your balance, fee shown on every payout.

  • QuickBooks or Xero

Client invoices and payments sync as they do today. Approved expenses and adjustments land in Handl project costs.

Frequently asked questions

Does Handl hold my money?
No, never. Pay runs leave your own Wise balance and go to the contractor. Handl drafts the statement and records the payout.
Can Handl see my whole Wise account?
Honestly, a full-access token is broad. That's Wise's rule, not ours: read-only tokens can't fund transfers. Treat it like a password. Handl uses it to read your balances and incoming transfers and to quote, create and fund the transfers in pay runs that a person has approved, inside the caps you set. You can revoke the token in Wise at any time.
Which token type do I need?
A full-access personal API token. Read-only tokens can't fund transfers, so they won't work for pay runs.
What if I disconnect?
Disconnect Wise in Handl, and revoke the token in Wise if you want to cut off access completely. Pay runs can't be funded from Wise until you connect it again or connect Airwallex.
Do my contractors need Wise?
No. A bank account works. If they have a Wise account you can pay it by email or Wisetag, and same-currency Wise to Wise is free.
Which plans include it?
Pay your team is $5 per contractor paid, per month, on every plan. Free while we're in early access, until 31 January 2027. You pay the provider's transfer fee directly and Handl adds nothing to it.
